I learned a long time ago that the money in your business is in your database. Okay, your systems and processes are important too but it's your list of clients that holds the gold. Have a new product or service? Tell your database about it. Are you having a sale? Tell your list of buyers about it. Selling your business? The bigger the list, the bigger the payday.
So, how do you go about growing your list of email subscribers? Basically, you only need 4 things to grow your email list:
- Opt-in form - The first thing you need is a way to capture your visitors data. This is done with an opt-in form. Your form should be highly visible and on every page. Ideally, you will want your opt-in form to be attached to an autoresponder. You'll also want to keep it short. If possible, just ask for their name and email address.
- Compelling reason - People don't just subscribe anymore. You have to give them a good reason to put in their contact information. This can be done with a free report, whitepaper, e-book, tip sheet, or any number of other things that you know your target audience will get a lot of use out of.
- Call-to-Action - Don't assume that people know what to do when they see a white box that says email address in it. Cleary tell people what to do. You want to make it as easy as possible for everyone to give up their information. For more information on call to actions read this article here.
- Traffic - Once you have all of the above set up, you will want to drive as much traffic to your site as possible. The more traffic you have to your website, the more chances you have that people will sign up to your email list. There are a lot of different ways to drive traffic to your site, for more on that subject, go to a previous blog post I wrote: 3 Ways to Drive Traffic to Your Website.
Well, those are the basics. Once you have those down, you may want to go on to more advanced techniques like: A/B testing, list segmentation, pop-ups, etc. When you measure your conversions, you'll see that just a little tweak, can make a big difference in the number of people who subscribe. But that's for a different blog post.
For now, put to use the four things I've laid out to grow your email list with prospects who will anticipate your marketing e-mail messages. Let's start building your email subscriber list today!
